Former bookkeeper sentenced in theft

A former bookkeeper for Ben Shaool Construction was sentenced Thursday to five years, with all but 90 days suspended, for stealing more than $87,000 from his employer, according to Washington County District Court records.

Benjamin Allen Walz, 30, of 1103 Pennsylvania Ave. in Hagerstown, had pleaded guilty to theft of more than $500 in value, according to court records.

Charges of theft scheme of more than $500 and embezzlement were dismissed, court records state.

Walz, who was employed as the 1758 Dual Highway construction company's bookkeeper from January 2003 until his firing in February 2004, was charged in connection with more than $87,000 missing from three company bank accounts, court records state.

The sentence is to be served in the Washington County Detention Center, court records state.
