Mail Call

December 09, 2004

"In response to the complaint about the JFK race. It is very well planned and implemented. Most of the race is off the road anyhow. Everyone in that area knows well in advance about the race. It is no more inconvenient than the Mummers' Parade blocking all of downtown Hagerstown. As soon as the race is over, you can hardly tell that more than 1,000 people had been running down Dam 4 Road. Just plan to get all your chores done in advance or stay home that day. It is only one day of the year, people. Give them a break."

- Dam 4 Road

"I want to thank the employees of Fuji Color for their food basket that they donated to my family for Thanksgiving. I appreciate it and I hope that God blesses them for what they have done. I would also like to thank Mary Anna Kline of Williamsport for her generosity with the food bank."

"I want to apologize to the waitress. If you are required to put the bill on the table at the beginning of the meal, than you weren't in the wrong for doing so. If your company wants business, they need to change their policy. Bring the bill at the end of the meal for payment, bring back the change, the tips are always left on the table, then you will be given more. Just don't ask if we want change anymore."

- Washington County

"Just a few comments. A 10 percent raise to Elizabeth Morgan? That is a kick in the face to us taxpayers around here. We don't have the money for the School Board now. We don't have the money for everything they want to do in this county and she gets a 10 percent raise. I am curious, has anyone gotten a 10 percent raise, anyone at all, anyone from a company that is so poor they have to beg for money, gotten a raise from them?"

- Hagerstown

"As a lifelong fan of the JFK marathon, it saddens me to read in Mail Call to hear residents complaining about this remarkable event and wanting it to be held elsewhere. I was talking to one of the young Marine Corps runners at the finish line this year and I asked him how he and his teammates had done. He responded that they did real well, but a few of the teammates were unable to participate this year because they were elsewhere. It seems like some of the narrow-minded residents are getting their wishes granted, many of the JFK runners from past years are doing their run elsewhere, it is in a place called Iraq."

- Washington County

"The Superintendent of Schools only gets paid $140,000. That is nothing. Look at how many staff members she is in charge of."

- Hagerstown

"I was wondering if anyone in the Pennsylvania or the Washington County area know if there are any restaurants open on Christmas Day. If you know any, call me at 301-416-0269."

"The picture on the front of Tuesday's Morning Herald shows a bicycle side by side, you might want to tell your reporter that a tandem is front and back, not side by side."

"We can settle this entire tip thing right now. When you give them a bill, tell them you will be back with their change."

- Washington County

"There was a big article in the paper a few weeks ago, where the fire companies would be charging you for every service they perform for you. Well, I got something in the mail asking for a donation. Why do we have to give a donation, when they are going to charge us for everything? You don't need a donation, we are paying for everything now."

- Hagerstown

"The city of Hagerstown is such a wonderful place to live. The local sewer treatment plant is the worst operated plant in the state of Maryland and now we find out that the water main that feeds 100,000 people are 75 plus years old. It's absolutely amazing. I think some big changes are in need at City Hall."

"Thank God Ex-Mayor Bruchey is running for mayor again. He was the best and things weren't messed up like they are now."

"The mayor and council will continue to dissatisfy the local people. We are within one hour drive of the top hospital. Just shut it down and only have emergency services only. Did everyone know that Cumberland and Chambersburg will have their new hospital built before we even dig in the ground? We are digging ourselves in the grave in debt."

- Washington County

"I just wanted to call to thank the people at the Valley Mall that do the volunteer work at the Red Cross Gift Wrapping centers. This is a great cause and they do a great job. I hope everyone who reads this will go to the mall and stop by these booths and get their packages wrapped, put a donation in the container to go for a good cause. Thanks to all the volunteers for making the holiday season a little brighter."

- Hagerstown

"To the man who left the gift of money for me with the cashier at Wal-Mart: I wish I knew who you were so I could thank you in person. You made my Christmas merry, you are my Christmas Angel."

- Washington County

"About the phone books being dropped along the mail boxes. This lady came by and dropped three off at each mailbox. Why? Because she probably wanted to get rid of them, but still get paid the same amount of money."

- Boonsboro
