Gantt leads Hubs to season-opening victory

SYKESVILLE, Md. -Quielan Gantt had 17 points, nine rebounds and three steals to lead North Hagerstown to a 66-45 victory over South Carroll in the season opener for both teams Tuesday.

Colby Thompson added 16 points, eight steals and four blocks, while Jarell Rodriguez had 13 points and six rebounds and Tyrell Wilson had eight points and 12 rebounds for the Hubs (1-0).

Liberty 61, Boonsboro 46

ELDERSBURG, Md. - Boonsboro was guilty of 26 turnovers, including five which were converted by Liberty as part of a 19-4 third-quarter run which broke the contest wide open.

Liberty held a 14-point margin at the foul line. Boonsboro made only 7 of 18.

Kyle Kane scored 12 points to lead the Warriors, Jared Lyons added 11 and Mike DeBarge scored 10. Todd Potter had seven rebounds and four assists.

Century 63, Smithsburg 45

SYKESVILLE, Md. - Smithsburg was outscored by 19 points in the second half and the Leopards dropped their season opener at Century.

Clay Marquiss had team-highs of 13 points and nine rebounds for Smithsburg (0-1), which committed 23 turnovers.

Ryan Dantoni had 19 points for Century (1-1).

Heritage 65, Highland View 30

Heritage Academy had 11 players reach the scoring column, led by Jeremy Dozier's 13 points. Dozier added 11 rebounds, while Travis Hendershot had seven assists and six steals.

T. Johnson 64, Aberdeen 57

ABERDEEN, Md. - Thomas Johnson took advantage of the absence of Aberdeen's Robbie Jackson in the first half and held on to win its season opener.

The Patriots built a 34-26 halftime lead while Jackson, Aberdeen's 7-foot center, was on the bench with two fouls. TJ offset Jackson's 19-point second half with good shooting and transition baskets off steals to beat the big man down the floor.

Jair Brady finished with 27 points to lead the Patriots, while Tim Abercrombie added 13 points and seven assists. John Truxille had 10.

Frederick 71, Catoctin 46

FREDERICK, Md. - Steven Custis had 19 points to lead Frederick to a season-opening win over Catoctin.

Chris Thompson added 17 points, Lenwood House had 16 points, nine rebounds and three steals and Quenton Beard had 10 rebounds for the Cadets (1-0).

Kyle Huyser scored 10 points, while Derrick Thompson had eight points and six assists for the Cougars (0-1).

Tuscarora 58, Linganore 48

FREDERICK, Md. - Malcom Kattes had 22 points to lead Tuscarora to a season-opening win against Linganore.

After a sluggish start the Titans (1-0) used an 11-0 run in the second quarter to seize control and stepped up its defense to seal the win. Hamilton Woodfolk had 13 points and six rebounds and Danny Reed had five assists.

Corey Nicholson led Linganore with 10 points, eight rebounds and four steals and Tim Randolph had five assists.

Urbana 68, Middletown 63

IJAMSVILLE, Md. - Ryan Brandenburg had a game-high 37 points as Urbana knocked off Middletown despite making just 14 of 32 free throws.

Middletown (0-1) carried an eight-point lead into the fourth quarter, but the Knights were outscored 20-7, spoiling their season opener. Partrick Carner had 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Alex Carr had 15 points, John Hall added 10 and Joe Keimig handed out eight assists.

Walkersville 87, Brunswick 38

WALKERSVILLE, Md. -Luther Weedon had 26 points to lead Walkersville to a season-opening victory over Brunswick (0-2).

Chris Hannigan had 21 points and 18 rebounds, while Jabari Brown had 17 points and nine rebounds and Dave Berry had seven assists and four steals for the Lions (1-0).

J. Buchanan 53, Northern 35

YORK, Pa. - Sophomore Shane Rife paced James Buchanan (2-1) to its second straight win with 11 points and eight rebounds. Brandon Bryan, also a sophomore, scored 11 points and Matt Heckman had five steals.

M. Hershey 66, Greencastle 52

HERSHEY, Pa. - Jaren Gembe had 16 points, five rebounds and three assists in Greencastle-Antrim's loss against Milton Hershey.

Brian Dodson added 17 points and five assists, while Adam Wiestling had six points and five rebounds for the Blue Devils (1-2, 0-1).

McConnellsburg 53, Everett 48

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Matt Spriggs had 22 points, nine assists and four steals as McConnellsburg edged Everett in a Sideling Hill League opener.

Dave Thomas had 18 rebounds and eight points and Neil Peck had 10 points for the Spartans (3-0, 1-0 ).

Waynesboro 69 Boiling Springs 65

BOILING SPRINGS, Pa. - Jordan Reitz scored 16 of his game-high 29 points from the free throw line to lead Waynesboro past Boiling Springs.

Kevin Kline had 15 points, while Cory Livengood had nine and John Long added eight for the Indians (2-1). Long also grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked five shots.

Emmanuel Bap. 61, CVCS 58

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. - Cumberland Valley Christian scored the first 12 points of the second half and led 41-38, but the Blazers couldn't hang on in a loss to Emmanuel Baptist.

Adam Romero led CVCS (1-3) with 19 points, while Jordan McBeth added 12 to go with nine rebounds. The Blazers committed 20 turnovers in the loss.
