Mail Call for 12-7

December 08, 2004

"To the person who called in about the food cards being used in convenience stores to buy premade food. Not all the convenience stores accept the Independence Card. There are some local stores that will not take them."

- Hagerstown

"A helpful hint for people with little kids, the plastic coffee cans can be used to store small toys in. Don't throw them out, use them for the small toys. They work great, the kids can carry them around, move them all around, without losing the toys."

"The Health Department did a wonderful job at the Elks Club with the flu shots. There were hundreds of people out there and I was in there within five minutes, got my shot and was out of there. Congratulations on a well- organized effort."

Washington County

"I want to thank the Health Department on the top-of-the- line-job they did handling out the flu shots. Everyone was kind, efficient and everything was done in order. People were directing and helping you everywhere. Have a blessed Christmas."

"Thank goodness for the wonderful article about Christmas trees in the Sunday, Nov. 28 paper. If you didn't get to read it, make sure you do. All the Christmas trees in Washington County look like Hershey's kisses. Maybe one of these years, some of the tree growers will have learned something. I will gladly go to West Virginia and pay more for a tree that looks like a real tree and I am sure there are other people who will, too."

- Hagerstown

"Does anyone know how you can become an LPN?"

- Washington County

"I wanted to express my thanks to the editors at The Herald-Mail for what I have seen in the past couple of years to be a turnaround in a lot of pro-hunting and pro-gun articles. Being in the area we are in, it's nice to see something like that. Everything you read in most papers is anti-gun and anti-hunting, so thanks for the great coverage."

- Smithsburg

"I have construction material left from a job that could be used for firewood. I also have 1950s windows, upper and lower sash with no frames along with some storm windows, free for the taking. Call me at 301-991-3186."

- Hagerstown

"I too am wondering why we don't have a candle vigil for our loved ones lost over the years at Boonsboro Cemetery. I would also like to see one take place because I have a son buried there."

- Hagerstown

"I am calling from Beaver Creek Christian Church. This is a great big thank you to Denny Warrenfeltz for donating his time, talent and gorgeous holiday decorations. He oversees the hanging of the greens every year. You are appreciated more than you know, Denny."

"To everyone who has nothing to do but complain, go and volunteer at the food banks, churches, etc., and put some of that anger to good use."

- Hagerstown

"Hey, people, listen up, there is a new lawyer in town. Congratulations to Sherry for passing the bar."

- Washington County

"The staff at the Washington County Health Department needs to be commended for the efficient manner in which they handled the flu clinic."

- Washington County

"We can't get teachers to teach or stay in our county or state because we have the worst retirement system in the entire country, 50 out of 50. Maryland is rock bottom out of all 50 states. The poor states in the country have far better retirement than Maryland. So the legislators need to start paying attention to this immediately."

- Washington County

"I wanted to thank the lady who honked her horn to let me know that my gas cap was off my car. I was driving it without my cap on the gas tank. I went to City Park the other day and I think that the improvements they are making so far look nice. I will be glad when they finish the entire park so it can get back to normal."

- Sharpsburg

"To the person who gave me the advice about not going to Columbia with the car key and my advice to anyone else, don't go. I believe these people who called."

- Maugansville

"I want to thank Rev. Eddie James for his column in last week's Daily Mail. If only we could get enough people to voice an outcry against letting the minority destroy our celebration of Christ's birth. I went to a tree lighting in Hancock and looked for one symbol as to why we have Christmas. Finding none, I went home and played Christmas CDs. I love to sing about our Lord that died for our sins."

- Hancock

"I experienced a scary feeling on Friday when I came home to pick up my daughter from the bus stop at 3 p.m. There was no bus and I had no idea where my 7-year-old daughter could be. She was walking around crying and looking for help. It's a good thing I had gone to the grocery store in the afternoon and gotten home early. I don't approve of buses just dropping kids off if there are no parents there to pick them up. They should take them back to the school and call parents. Maybe all stores and supermarkets could also announce when there is an early dismissal in case there are parents there. Parents don't know if the kids are getting out early if they aren't home to watch TV or listen to the radio."
