Pa. firefighter's death attributed to blunt force trauma

YORK, Pa. - A spokeswoman at the York County Coroner's Office said Tuesday that the cause of death for Jackson H. Gerhart, a Franklin County volunteer firefighter who died Sunday, was multiple blunt force trauma caused when he fell off a firetruck.

Gerhart, 65, of Shippensburg, Pa., was found lying on the ground near a firetruck at the scene of a house fire. No one saw him fall from the truck, according to officials at the scene.

He never regained consciousness. He was flown to York Hospital, where he died Sunday afternoon.

Gerhart, a popular local firefighter who belonged to several area fire companies, retired in 1994 after a 32-year career with the Washington, D.C., Fire Department.

A viewing will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home in Shippensburg.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Chambersburg, Pa., followed by burial at Norland Cemetery in Chambersburg.
