Sale of empty school delayed by Chambersburg board

December 06, 2004|by DON AINES

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Letterkenny Elementary School, closed before the beginning of the school year by the Chambersburg School Board, will not be put up for sale for the time being.

The agenda for last Wednesday night's school board meeting included a recommendation that the board authorize the 50-year-old school on Mountain Road in Letterkenny Township be put up for sale. Board member Stanley Helman, however, suggested the board delay action until the district had a chance to discuss the matter with members of that community.

Helman said that if residents have a legitimate use for the property, such as a community center, the district could lease the building at the nominal fee as long as any interested group paid any expenses such as utilities and maintenance.

On a motion by board member Robert Helman, the board voted to table consideration of the sale of the building until January.

Built in 1954, the school had one classroom for each grade from first through fifth grades. The school had approximately 85 students during the 2003-04 school year, according to district figures.

Students from Letterkenny were transferred to Lurgan Elementary School this year.
