Nonprofit organizations share holiday wish lists

W House, a halfway house in Hagerstown for women with alcohol and drug addictions, was among a handful of Tri-State area nonprofit organizations that benefited from a nonprofit holiday wish list published last December in The Herald-Mail.

The organization last year requested help providing small gift items to residents to create a memorable holiday celebration, said Christina Trenton, executive director of W House.

"In response, we received gloves, hats, grocery store gift certificates, journals, pens, stationery and personal hygiene products," Trenton said. "We also received donations of children's books for our child development room and gently used Christmas decorations to decorate our much larger building."

W House residents also enjoyed donated turkey and ham for Christmas dinner and canned and dry goods to be used as needed, Trenton said.

Dozens of nonprofit agencies requested volunteers, money and items to help them serve their clients during the holiday season and beyond. Most of those wishes were unfulfilled in 2003 - but employees of local nonprofit organizations have again submitted their holiday wish lists in hopes of a better response in 2004.

"We did not receive any response last year, but we're eager to keep trying," said Tracy Holliday, assistant director of the Renfrew Institute for Cultural and Environmental Studies in Waynesboro, Pa.

To make a donation, please contact an organization using the information that accompanies each list.
