Town announces holiday festivities

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Town officials are inviting the public to join them in a celebration of Christmas.

Events will start today with caroling by the Charles Town Presbyterian Church Men's Choir, Mayor Randy Hilton said. Santa Claus will light a community Christmas tree at 7 p.m. in front of the Jefferson County Courthouse, and hayrides on Charles Street will follow the ceremony, Hilton said.

· The classic holiday play "Scrooge" will be performed at the Old Opera House at 8 p.m., with additional performances Dec. 4, Dec. 5, Dec. 10, Dec. 11 and Dec. 12.

· On Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 a.m., there will be a puppet show at the Charles Town Visitor's Center beside the courthouse.

· Santa Claus will arrive on the roof of United Bank at 1:45 p.m.

· The 63rd annual Charles Town/Ranson Christmas Parade will begin at 2 p.m. The theme of this year's parade is "Deck the World with Love."

· On Dec. 12, the fifth annual Charles Town Parade of Horses will be downtown at 2 p.m. The lineup will begin at Charles Town Races and proceed on Washington, Congress, Samuel and Mildred streets.

· On Dec. 12, the Washington House Inn and the Carriage Inn Bed and Breakfast will hold open houses from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
