Hawks win Wilkes tourney

WILKESBORO, N.C. - Veronica Johnson had 13 points, 11 rebounds and six assists as Hagerstown Community College beat Northern Virginia 58-57 in the final of the Wilkes Thanksgiving Tournament on Sunday.

The Hawks, who have won four straight games, led by 17 points with 10 minutes remaining in the game but scored just eight points the rest of the way.

"We've been winning games with defense and rebounds lately," HCC coach Marlys Palmer said. "They got hot toward the end and we went through a bit of a dry spell, but we were able to hold them off. I've been real pleased with the way we're playing."

Erica McDavid grabbed 13 rebounds and Jackie Hamilton pulled down nine for the Hawks (4-2), who had 62 rebounds in the game.


Gina Harshman had 11 points and Angela Orsini had 10.


Hood 85, Framingham State (Mass.) 76

PITTSBURGH - Santo Provenzano had 26 points and David Wilson had 17 points and 14 rebounds to lead Hood College past Framingham State at the Carnegie Mellon Tournament.

Sean Robine had 10 rebounds, while South Hagerstown graduate Jesse Gutekunst had 12 points and nine rebounds for Hood (3-2).

Ralph Sully had 16 points, Anthony Washington 15 and Joe Faradie 14 for Framingham (3-2).
