Runners started their Thanksgiving Day with a "little appetizer" before the big meal - a 5-kilometer Turkey Trot around Hagerstown Community College on Thursday morning.

Andy Reid, HCC head track coach, said about 136 people participated in the fourth annual event.

Proceeds from the Turkey Trot will be used for cross country and track scholarships and travel expenses, Reid said.

The run began at the outdoor track, wound around the campus and ended inside the Athletic Recreation & Community Center.

"It's basically just a little appetizer for the real turkey later in the afternoon," Reid said. "The one thing is it's a fun thing to do."

The winner of the run was Mark Geissins, who completed the course in 15 minutes, 49 seconds.

Geissins was followed by Brett Mower (16:12) and Doug Oates (16:20).

The fastest female competitor was Maureen Hall, who completed the course in 18:43.

Hall was followed by Jennifer Hartnett (19:39) and Theresa Ruland (20:21).
