GREENCASTLE, Pa. - The woman who died in an accident Wednesday afternoon in Antrim Township, Pa., on U.S. 11 was identified by Pennsylvania State Police in Chambersburg, Pa., as Diana L. Mellott of Martinsburg, W.Va.

Police said Thursday that Mellott, 57, died at the scene of the accident, which happened on U.S. 11 north of Frank Road.

Mellott's mother, Irene L. Dean, was a passenger in the vehicle and received serious injuries, police said.

Dean, 79, was taken to Washington County Hospital, police said. A hospital spokeswoman said Thursday night Dean was in fair condition.

Police said Dean sustained a broken pelvis, among other injuries.

Police said Mellott was driving north on U.S. 11 when she lost control of the vehicle, spun several times, crossed the center turning lane and then the southbound lane, before leaving the road.

The vehicle then hit a telephone pole, causing extensive damage to the driver's side, police said.

Dean had to be freed from the vehicle, police said.

Police are asking that anyone with information about the crash can call them at 717-264-5161.

The investigation was continuing, police said.
