Group seeking to commemorate old jail looking for donations

November 25, 2004|by MARLO BARNHART

Members of Each One Teach One are seeking financial help in their efforts to commemorate the history of the old Washington County Jail, which stood on Jonathan Street from 1826 until the 1980s.

The old jail was destroyed by fire in 1857 and rebuilt on the same site the next year. That jail was replaced in the mid-1980s by the current Washington County Detention Center and was razed a short time later, according to Capt. Doug Mullendore of the Washington County Sheriff's Department.

Brian Robinson, director of Each One Teach One, said two plaques will be designed by G.S. Imaging and erected at the original site of the jail in the parking lot. The cost of those plaques is $1,729.30.

Each One Teach One is a nonprofit organization dedicated to working with youth and adults to improve the community.

Donations may be sent to Each One Teach One, c/o Bethel Gardens, 356 Henry Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21740. For more information, call Cathy Dotson at 301-733-3350.
