CHAMBERSBURG, PA. - A 68-year-old Chambersburg man died Tuesday morning of injuries he sustained when he was hit by a vehicle at the intersection of Wayne and Sheller avenues, according to Franklin County Coroner Jeffrey R. Conner.

Thomas C. Critchfield, of 1127 Stanley Ave., was pronounced dead at Chambersburg Hospital at 6:27 a.m., Conner said.

An autopsy was performed at Lehigh Valley Medical Center in Allentown, Pa., and Conner said the cause of death was blunt-force multiple trauma to the head and chest.

Chambersburg police said the accident happened at approximately 6 a.m. when Critchfield was struck by a vehicle in the right-hand southbound lane of Wayne Avenue.

The report did not identify the driver of the vehicle and police had not released that information as of Tuesday afternoon.

The report did not indicate whether Critchfield was walking along or crossing the road. The accident was being investigated by the police department's accident investigation team, police said.

Roger Beckner, the owner of Beckner's Wayne Avenue Sunoco, said he had just arrived at work when someone came into the store.

"They said 'Dial 911. A guy just got hit and he's lying in the middle of the road,'" Beckner said. Beckner called for help on his cell phone and went to Critchfield, who he said had no pulse.

Beckner did not know Critchfield by name, but said, "he normally walked up the road there every morning."
