Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Andrew L. Shank, son of Tammy L. and Kenneth L. Shank of Falling Waters, W. Va., recently departed on a routine scheduled deployment in support of the global war on terrorism, while assigned to the guided-missile destroyer USS Barry, homeported in Norfolk, Va.

Shank and more than 7,600 of his fellow shipmates of the USS Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group (CSG), took part in Summer Pulse '04 and successfully completed their Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX) to prepare for their deployment.

Shank is a 2001 graduate of Hedgesville High School of Hedgesville, W.Va., and joined the Navy in July 2001.

Chief Petty Officer Douglas Garner of the U.S. Navy's Reserve Force recently graduated from the United States Navy's Center for Anti-terrorism and Naval Security Force School located in Norfolk, Va.

Garner will assist in the development and implementation of anti-terrorism and physical security plans for naval ships and shore installations worldwide.


Garner's civilian occupation is as a police officer for the City of Hagerstown's Police Department. During periods of active duty, he is assigned to the Commander of Submarine Group Ten, Kings Bay, Ga.

Christopher P. Aeillo, son of Tom P. and Pam J. Aeillo of Middletown, Md., has graduated from the Army ROTC (Reserve Officers' Training Corps) Leader Development and Assessment Course, also known as "Operation Warrior Forge," at Fort Lewis, Tacoma, Wash.

Spc. Phillip Dudley, son of Henry and Peggy Dudley of Hagerstown, graduated with honors from basic training and AIT (Advanced Individual Training) at Fort Sill, Okla., on Sept. 9, 2004.

While there he served as one of four squad leaders for his platoon and received a badge for physical training.

Dudley is now serving at Fort Wainwright, Ark., as a fire support specialist.

Army Pvt. Joshua E. Helman, son of Amy M. Trione of Chambersburg, Pa., has deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom to engage in military operations involving U.S. and coalition forces.

The soldier is regularly assigned to one of the various camps and units (infantry, aviation, armor, artillery, engineer, command support, etc.) of the 2nd Infantry Division, Eighth U.S. Army based in South Korea. Soldiers of the 2nd Infantry Division deployed to Iraq either to augment soldiers serving in country or to replace soldiers whom had completed their tour of duty.

Helman, a cannon crewmember and a 2003 graduate of Chambersburg Area Senior High School.

Air Force Airman Elizabeth R. Workman, daughter of Shellene and Roger Reed of Martinsburg, W.Va. has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Workman is a 2004 graduate of Musselman High School, Inwood, W.Va.
