Sculptor's work placed at veterans memorial

November 11, 2004

HANCOCK - An original sculpture by Sinclair Hamilton recently was erected at the veterans memorial near the entrance to Widmeyer Park.

"It's a bronze of a woman and a child. The little girl is pointing toward the wall with the veterans' names on it while looking back at the woman," Hamilton said.

Even though the sculpture has only been in the park a short time, Hamilton said he has been pleased to hear a number of different interpretations from viewers as to what the dialogue might be between the woman and the child.

An artist who came to Hancock from the Washington, D.C., area, Hamilton lives and has his sculpture studio in the old bank building at 24 W. Main St. in Hancock.

The sculpture was commissioned by the local Veterans of Foreign Wars, a group that has been responsible for the development of the veterans' memorial, Hamilton said.

He said he was impressed with their dedication to the project and was pleased to be a part of it.
