Crumbs from the cracker barrel

November 10, 2004|from the Cracker Barrel

As Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee and Col. John B. Gordon talked near the sunken road that separated the Piper and Roulette farms north of Sharpsburg on Sept. 17, 1862, Gordon commented, "These men (6th Alabama) are going to stay here, General, till the sun goes down or victory is won!" By the time the Battle of Antietam concluded, Col. Gordon had sustained five wounds but survived to present the formal Confederate surrender to Union Gen. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain at Appomattox in the spring of 1865.
