Climber 'lucky' his injuries weren't more severe, ranger says

November 09, 2004

SANDY HOOK - A Washington, D.C., college student is "lucky" that he was not severely injured as a result of a 75-foot fall while rock climbing in the Maryland Heights area Sunday, said Jennifer Flynn, chief ranger at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park.

Flynn said the 19-year-old man, originally from Arizona, fell while rock climbing Sunday afternoon and struck ledges, rocks and brush along the way. She said it "could've easily been a fatal fall."

Flynn said the man, who asked park officials not to release his name, could have been released from Washington County Hospital as early as Monday with only minor injuries.

The fall was believed to be caused by climber error, she said.
