REACH set to open Cold Weather Shelter

Staff and volunteers at REACH are set to open the 2004-2005 Cold Weather Shelter on Nov. 14. The congregational-based, rotating shelter is open seven days a week - Monday through Saturday from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. and Sunday from 3 p.m. to 7 a.m.

The shelter's first site is First Christian Church, 1345 Potomac Ave., Hagerstown, from Nov. 14-28.

The rest of the schedule includes:

· Grace United Methodist Church, Winter and Church streets, Nov. 28-Dec. 1.

· Hagerstown Church of the Brethren, 15 S. Mulberry St., Dec. 12-26.

· St. John's Episcopal Church, 101 S. Prospect St., Dec. 26 - Jan. 2, 2005.

· Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 802 Summit Ave., Jan. 2-16, 2005.

· Trinity Lutheran Church, 15 Randolph Ave., Jan. 16-Feb. 6, 2005.

· St. John's Lutheran Church, 141 S. Potomac St., Feb. 6-20, 2005.

REACH Director Terri Baker said hopes are that the Cold Weather Shelter will be in the new REACH Center at 130 W. Franklin St. for the remaining shelter days of Feb. 20 through April 3.


Donations of the following items are needed: ground coffee, powdered drink mixes, instant coffee, condiments, instant hot chocolate, sugar and creamer shakers, salt and pepper shakers, dry cereal, instant cup of noodles, instant oatmeal, paper products, plastic utensils, personal hygiene products, laundry soap, ice packs, pillows, first-aid supplies, liquid dish soap, trash bags, lip balm, dental floss, plastic wrap, cleaner sprays, foil, powdered milk, heavy work gloves, socks and thermal underwear.
