Veterans Day activities planned

Following is a list of some of the Veterans Day activities planned in the area:

The Joint Veterans Council of Washington County will host a Veterans Day memorial service at the Veterans of Washington County Wall in Marty Snook Park, Halfway, on Thursday, Nov. 11, at 9 a.m. Former Washington County Commissioner Ronald Bowers, a retired military officer, will be the speaker.

A memorial honoring the two Washington County Medal of Honor recipients will be dedicated.

WILLIAMSPORT - The Veterans Day observance at Homewood at Williamsport will be held Thursday, Nov. 11, and will be a luncheon instead of the traditional breakfast.

Following the noon meal in the dining room, members of Williamsport American Legion Post 202 will present a short program to honor all veterans who served their country.


A videotape of the dedication of the new Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., will be part of the observance.

Morris Frock Unit No. 42, American Legion Auxiliary, will sponsor a Veterans Day ceremony in front of the Washington County Courthouse on Thursday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m.

At the ceremony, representatives from service organizations and local officials will lay wreaths in honor and memory of veterans.

Douglas Tait, a Vietnam veteran who served for 26 years as a helicopter pilot and reconnaissance pilot, will be the guest speaker. He is a test pilot for Northrop Grumman.

The Mason Dixon Barbershop Chorus and trumpeters Melissa Lloyd and Bryant Hendrickson of North Hagerstown High School will perform.

Unit members leading the program will be Dorothy Smith, chaplain of Morris Frock Unit No. 42, American Legion Auxiliary, and Linda Reid, first vice president.

West Washington Street will be closed from 11 a.m. to noon in front of the courthouse because of the observance.

SHARPSBURG - A Veterans Day celebration will begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 11, in the Sharpsburg Town Square.

The event, which will feature speakers and special music, is sponsored by Unit 236 Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion in Sharpsburg.

CLEAR SPRING - The annual Veterans Day assembly at Clear Spring High School will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 11.

Faculty, staff and students will join in the celebration in honor of the nation's veterans.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The annual Veterans Day service at Letterkenny Chapel will begin at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 11.

Lt. Col. William C. Gibson will be guest speaker. A member of the class of 2005 at the U.S. Army War College, he has served in a number of posts, including commander of the 840th U.S. Army Transportation Battalion in Turkey.

Gary Patterson, piper, and Ferree LeFevre, director of music at St. John's UCC in Chambersburg, will provide music.

Members of Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599, Veterans of Foreign Wars, will present and retire the colors.

The service is sponsored by the United Churches of the Chambersburg area and the Joint Veterans Council of Chambersburg.
