Apollo Civic Theatre


"Today's Special: Bombs on the Half Shell" is a political satire set in Chester Pinkham's restaurant in middle America in 1982.

The comedy by Stephen Levi will have its East Coast premiere at the Apollo Civic Theatre on Friday, Nov. 12.

Levi, who directs the Martinsburg production, said his work is about the insanity of war that could escalate to a nuclear conflict.

Brunswick Community Theater meets at 7:15 p.m. on the last Wednesday of each month at the town's City Park Building, 655 E. Potomac St., where there's a stage. Everybody who comes reads, said Clay Carey, president. The atmosphere is casual, he added.

On Wednesday, Nov. 10, the group will meet at the library to read portions of the comedy "Greater Tuna."

Potomac Playmakers' 2004-05 season - its 79th - will open Friday, Nov. 12, with "Once On This Island," a musical set in the West Indies.

"It's just a fun show," said director Ruth Ridenour, who's been involved with the local nonprofit, volunteer group since she was in the chorus of "Kiss Me Kate" in 1979.

"Once On This Island," an adaptation of "The Little Mermaid," tells the story of a peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with a young man from a wealthy family. Her love is tested by the forces of prejudice, hatred and death.

The musical, by the creators of "Ragtime" and "Seussical," will be presented at the Women's Club auditorium.
