Gooden wins Berkeley County assessor's race

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Former Berkeley County Sheriff Preston B. Gooden, a Republican, beat Democrat Larry A. Hess in the race for Berkeley County assessor, according to complete but unofficial results.

Gooden defeated Hess 17,066 votes to 14,351 votes.

The county's current assessor, Evelyn Fink, did not seek re-election.

Gooden, 64, of Marlowe, W.Va., served as sheriff from 1989 to 1996.

Hess, 54, of Martinsburg, has worked in the county assessor's office since 1986. He is the senior appraiser in the office.

Assessors in Berkeley County serve four -year terms and earn $37,400 a year in salary. Added to that is an extra $15,000 for performing such special duties as collecting dog tags, processing and verifying farm and timberland management applications, among other services.
