Gooden leads assessor's race

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Former Berkeley County Sheriff Preston B. Gooden, a Republican, was leading Democrat Larry A. Hess 51 percent to 48 percent in the race for Berkeley County assessor in Tuesday's voting, according to unofficial returns at presstime.

With 44 of the county's 59 polling places reporting, Gooden was leading Hess 11,506 to 10,046 votes.

The county's current assessor, Evelyn Fink, did not seek re-election.

Assessors in Berkeley County serve four-year terms and earn $37,400 a year.
