HANCOCK - A Hancock-area man jumped from a bridge over the Potomac River to his death Sunday afternoon, Maryland State Police said.

About 12:30 p.m., the 53-year-old man, whose identity was not released, jumped from the U.S. 522 bridge in Hancock into the Potomac River, according to police. Police, firefighters and emergency responders found the man in the river soon after, police said.

The man was taken to War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., where he was pronounced dead on arrival, police said.

Cpl. Patrick Morris said the man died of mass trauma from hitting the surface of the water. Morris said investigators do not believe foul play was involved, based on statements given by witnesses.

Morris said witnesses told investigators the man jumped a few moments after arriving on the bridge.

Morris declined to release additional information on the incident. He said the investigation was ongoing.
