MONT ALTO, Pa. - Women attending the 12th Annual Cumberland Valley Women's Conference at Penn State Mont Alto on Saturday helped themselves by attending the workshops, but also helped many women they don't know.

Conference organizers decided that this year they would ask participants to bring items from the Women in Need Wish List to the conference with them to be presented to a W.I.N. representative.

The 140 women there brought enough toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, calling cards, hand lotion, stamps, and similar items to fill 25 tote bags.

Alice Royer, senior instructor of Women's Studies and Adult Learner Coordinator at Penn State Mont Alto, chaired the event. "Take a look at what you've done," she told the women before presenting the totes. "We do care for all of our women in the Cumberland Valley."

Stacy McCole, education coordinator with W.I.N. Victim Services in Chambersburg, accepted the donations on behalf of her clients. "So many people coming together from various backgrounds brings strength and hope that I can take back to share with the clients, who often don't have a lot of hope. Knowing you brought these things for strangers means a lot to me, and I know it will mean a lot to them."

W.I.N. served 1,200 victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in the past fiscal year, McCole said, and operates a shelter that can house 16 women and children.

Keynote speaker was Dr. Tamera K. Humbert, instructor and program coordinator of Occupational Therapy at Penn State Berks. She discussed the current perspectives that focus on how thoughts and belief systems influence women's health through renewal and the promotion of well-being. She is pursuing ordination in the Episcopal Church.

The conference rotates among Wilson College, Shippensburg University and Penn State Mont Alto. The next one will be held Oct. 29, 2005, at Shippensburg.
