The father of a child who was unresponsive in a Washington, D.C., medical center Thursday has been charged with assaulting and abusing the girl, Hagerstown Police Department Chief Arthur Smith said late Thursday.

Smith said Scott E. Patterson has been charged in connection with an incident in which his 3-year-old daughter was seriously injured. Smith said Patterson was at large late Thursday.

"(Officers) are still trying to locate him," Smith said. "Hopefully, he'll be in custody by morning."

Patterson, 26, whose address was not released, is charged with first- and second-degree assault, and child abuse and reckless endangerment, according to a Hagerstown Police Department news release.

Police allege Patterson was responsible for injuries that required treatment at Children's National Medical Center earlier this week. Police said the girl was in critical condition and unresponsive Thursday.

The girl was severely injured inside the family home, police said. Police said they began investigating the incident while the girl was being treated at Washington County Hospital on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said Patterson initially told investigators that a dresser in the home fell on top of the girl, causing the injuries. Police allege there were "numerous discrepancies in his original story," according to a release.

An arrest warrant for Patterson was obtained Thursday by Detective Shane Blankenship, who could not be reached for comment on the case. Criminal Investigation Division Sgt. Curtis Wood also was unavailable Thursday.
