Student retreats in November


GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Camp Joy El will offer retreats for junior high and elementary students. All retreats include free-time and programmed activities, as well as age-appropriate teaching during chapel sessions.

The junior high retreat will be held Friday, Nov. 5, through Sunday, Nov. 7, for students in grades six through nine. The weekend will be focused on the theme, "The Missing Link." "The Missing Link" is about restoring students' link to God, their families and their friends. Students will participate in many caveman games and activities.

The elementary retreat will be held twice during the weekend of Friday, Dec. 3, through Sunday, Dec. 5, allowing students in grades three through six an opportunity to choose from two sessions - Friday and Saturday or Saturday and Sunday. The retreat will have a Christmas theme. Weather may allow for snow tubing and other snow games.

A homeschool retreat ends today.

Senior high students may attend a retreat in January.

Spare animals from parasites


FUNKSTOWN - Animal Health Clinic of Funkstown will offer a free seminar about parasites, both internal and external, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2. The seminar is open to the public.

The seminar will discuss how parasites are transferred from pet to pet and pet to human. It also will cover the types of parasites that can threaten humans.




Programs focus on families


Upcoming events include:

· FREDERICK, Md. - Parents and Kids Adoption Support Group will meet Friday, Nov. 5, and Saturday, Nov. 20. The free support group is for all adoptive parents and their preschool children and is co-sponsored by Families Plus!, The Frank Adoption Center and Adoptive Families and Friends.

· FREDERICK, Md. - Sandra Johansen and Gloria Mitchell will present a program for families that are dealing with a chronically ill child, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 8, at North Frederick Elementary School, 1001 Motter Ave.

Participants will receive information on issues chronically ill children might experience and how this affects the family. The possibility of an ongoing support group for adult family members and caregivers also will be explored.

The program is co-sponsored by Families Plus! and the FCPS' Counseling/Support Services. Child Care Choices continued training credit is available for Maryland child-care providers. · FREDERICK, Md. - Families Plus! provides a free, four-week series of childbirth and parenting classes for pregnant teenagers and their partners. These classes will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays, Nov. 3, 10 and 17, and Monday, Nov. 15, at Family Partnership, 7630-B Hayward Road.

The series is repeated every other month. Classes are co-sponsored by Family Partnership and Frederick County Health Department. For information and to register, call the health department at 1-301-631-3326.
