Mail Call

October 27, 2004

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"I find it unbelievable that a citizen is able to walk into the police department, allegedly assaulting a police officer and walk back out of the building without being arrested. I think the citizens of Hagerstown who depend on the protection of the police department deserve to know how in the world this happened. The chief owes the citizens an explanation."

"Paradise Homes' trick-or- treat night will be Thursday, Oct. 28. We will get the fliers out as soon as it stops raining."

"Dick Cheney wants everyone to know that if Kerry is elected, terrorists with suitcases containing nuclear bombs will attack our cities. Our own government admits, right now, that they have not gotten all the terrorists and that there probably are terrorists in the U.S. organized to carry out acts of violence against the American people. But Bush hasn't caught them yet. More than 12 years, two attacks, doesn't look like they are ready to attack us at any time or are that organized, but if you believe George Bush, if you don't re-elect him, America will be destroyed. What do you want us to do in the next election, make him king?"

"I can understand why Hagerstown is hosting ghost tours on Friday, Oct. 29, for it is surely a ghost town. There are no stores or anything open. Something to think about."

"If you want a flu shot, go work for Congress. It seems more than 2,000 congressional aides and congressmen have gotten flu shots. Very few of them are in the guidelines for those most at risk. The head of the Senate organized a flu vaccination in his office for many staff members, two days after the CDC said, 'only people at high risk should get the vaccine.' It seems that the Republicans and the Congress just don't care about the American people, but at least we know that they won't have the flu. Do us a favor on Election Day, throw all the bums out."

"This is to announce that Greenberry Hills will be having its annual trick-or-treat night on Thursday, Oct. 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. The patrols for our neighborhood will be out to watch out for the children."

"I think the trick-or-treating for the entire Tri-State area should only be one night for everyone. This way, you don't get carloads of kids in your community and this could also save the ones giving the candy out a lot of money. Plus, I think it should be the last Thursday of October."

"For the person complaining because they spent several hours before being seen at the emergency room. The only reason you probably sat there all that time was because you were probably there for something that was minor and didn't need immediate attention. There are a lot of people who misuse the emergency room, going for flu or cold symptoms. Don't abuse the emergency room. Also, the Robinwood Medical Center has the urgent care center that is open until 7 every evening, that is just as good as the emergency room."

"I called in about a week ago for donations of Black-eyed Susans. I would like to thank Mary, Anna and Nina for their contributions for our 100th anniversary. They were appreciated. Drop by and check it out. They really turned out nice. Thanks for all the support."

"I live on Garis Shop Road and I was wondering if anyone else on this road has had trouble getting their mail. We haven't been getting any mail. If anyone else is getting mine by mistake, please put it back in my mailbox."

"Does anyone need Mason jars? They are wide-mouthed and regular. Leave your name and number if interested."

"To the person who just moved to Hagerstown and was looking for a gun club. Try the North American Rod and Gun Club off of Jefferson Boulevard."

"I have seen several calls in Mail Call about keys. I lost a little set of keys about two weeks ago. One of the things that was on the key ring was like the top half of a Tinkerbell figure, in pewter. There is a key that has flames on it. My cell number is 240-291-2300."
