Reiber's repeat bid falters in first round

October 26, 2004

PREP GOLF

YORK, Pa. - Kevin Reiber's quest for a second straight PIAA state golf championship might be a tougher nut to crack than the first title was in 2003.

The Waynesboro senior shot an opening round 6-over-par 77 on Monday on the 6,400-yard Heritage Hills Golf Resort layout, leaving him eight shots behind co-leaders Dan Obremski of Penn Trafford and Jared Schmader of Maplewood.

Last year, after an opening 73 left him five shots off the pace, Reiber came back with a 69 to win the championship.

He was in trouble early Monday with a double bogey on the par-5 second hole and ended the front nine with a 37. Four bogies on the back nine contributed to a 40.

Chambersburg senior Chas Rahauser is in a position to contend. He's currently tied for seventh on the strength of a 36-37-73.

Trojans sophomore Clayton Rotz is tied for 13th after a 38-36-74; Waynesboro's Chad Bricker is tied for 19th following a 39-36-75; Chambersburg's Andrew Burke is tied for 42nd after a 39-40-79; and Waynesboro's Josh Arendt was tied for 55th with a 41-40-81.

The final round begins at 9 a.m. today with Reiber in a threesome starting on the first tee, while Bricker, Rotz and Rahauser will follow on the front side.

Arendt and Burke will begin their round off the back nine.
