Lincolnshire Elementary observes Red Ribbon Week

Lincolnshire Elementary School is one of many Washington County Public Schools observing Red Ribbon Week with a busy schedule of activities this week.

Lincolnshire's theme for the week is "Let's show good character by being drug free," focusing on the pillars of Character Counts through the morning announcements, posters and activities.

Students will sign a pledge today to stay drug free. Morning announcement guest readers throughout the week will include a police officer, firefighter, athlete, doctor, nurse and a parent who is serving in the military. Poster contest winners will be announced Wednesday.

Hickory Elementary hosts Scholastic Book Fair

Hickory Elementary School will host a Scholastic Book Fair today through Friday. A family night will be held Tuesday from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in conjunction with the PTA's Harvest Celebration. Proceeds will help add resources to the Library Media Center and the computer lab.


The fair is open to students, parents and the Hickory community each day from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and features specially priced books and educational products.

Greencastle bank hosts Star Saver skating party

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - The First National Bank of Greencastle held a skating and pizza party on Oct. 7 for the Star Saver Club at I-Skate 81. The Star Saver Club is a savings program designed for children aged 5 to 13, who are encouraged to save by opening a savings account. Parents are encouraged to work as a partner with the bank in teaching the important aspects of saving to their child.

All-County Orchestra Concert postponed

Washington County Schools officials have announced that the Washington County All-County Orchestra Concert will be moved to January 2005.

The original concert date of Nov. 6 has been changed to Jan. 22, 2005, with the concert to begin at 7:30 p.m.

Maryland Symphony Orchestra Conductor Elizabeth Schulze will guest-conduct the high school group and Hector Zavala will conduct the middle school group.

The Friday all-day rehearsal is rescheduled for Jan. 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

ZOOmobile to visit library

The ZOOmobile, an outreach project of the Baltimore County zoo, will visit the Washington County Free Library today from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. to present "Fur, Feathers and Scales" for all elementary school-aged children.

A second ZOOmobile will visit the Smithsburg Library at 3:30 p.m.

The program, sponsored through a grant from Columbia Gas, is about the similarities and differences between animal species. Each program includes a 20 to 30-minute interactive presentation on the topic, followed by a live animal demonstration.

The Boonsboro and Williamsport Memorial Libraries will host the program at 3 p.m. Nov. 3.
