County commission rejects state grant

October 23, 2004

The Washington County Commissioners hope to restore a 186-year-old house on French Lane, but they rejected a state grant this week to help them do so.

The County Commissioners decided at a meeting on Tuesday to reject a grant from the Maryland Historical Trust because accepting the state dollars would come with too many conditions.

The house, on 35 acres between Md. 63 and Hopewell Road, is a two-story stone structure built in 1818.

The commissioners decided to use $15,000 from their contingency fund and $10,000 from the Historic District Commission's budget to pay for the repairs.

The commissioners also directed the Historic District Commission to develop a plan for the property's use.
