Restaurant inspections

How it works


Each month, The Herald-Mail publishes the findings of initial food establishment inspections by the Washington County Health Department. Food service facilities are inspected on a regular basis to make sure they are following the regulations that govern such establishments.

Inspectors also conduct follow-up inspections and monitoring inspections, and investigate complaints and food-borne outbreaks.

Inspections are conducted at restaurants, nursing homes, schools, grocery stores and other places that serve food, including those that are only temporary such as fairs and carnivals.

Critical violations such as contaminated or spoiled food, improper temperatures of foods, improper cooking or no running water must be corrected immediately. Those items are marked with *.

Other violations must be corrected within 30 days. Follow-up inspections will be conducted as needed.

Those violations corrected on day of inspection are indicated as (corrected).




The following food service establishments were inspected by the Washington County Health Department in September and found to have critical violations that needed to be corrected immediately:

CVS Pharmacy, 1731 Dual Highway, Hagerstown - * all product with frozen condensation must be discarded (corrected); thermometers needed in all units.

Bentley's Bagels, 96 W. Washington St., Hagerstown - * remove product from sandwich unit (corrected); floor must be repaired; sandwich unit not keeping food at proper temperature.

Tony's Pizza Time Cafe, 10 E. Salisbury St., Williamsport - * ham must be discarded (corrected); pizza boxes cannot be stored on the floor; wipe cloths must be kept in sanitizer; floor in preparation area must be cleaned; thermometers needed in all units.

The Grille at Park Circle, 325 Virginia Ave., Hagerstown - * food in the sandwich refrigerator/preparation area must be kept at 45 degrees or below (corrected); ceiling and walls of walk-in refrigerator must be cleaned; torn gasket on walk-in freezer must be repaired; ice buildup in freezer must be cleared; floors and walls in dishwasher room and floor under cooking equipment line must be cleaned; walls and baseboards need repairs; repair dishwasher rinse cycle; must have test strips for dishwasher; noncommercial refrigerator/freezer doesn't meet requirements; trash receptacle must have lid; light bulb must be shielded.

The following food service establishments were inspected by the Washington County Health Department in September and found to have sanitation violations that must be corrected within 30 days:

Garfield's Restaurant and Pub, 17301 Valley Mall Road, Hagerstown - ice scoop improperly stored (corrected); light bulb must be replaced.

Cafe Italia, 935 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown - items cannot be stored in hand sink (corrected); ice scoop improperly stored (corrected); counter area, floors, hood filters, shelves of refrigerator and freezers, and floor of cooler must be cleaned; soap and towels needed at hand sink; light bulb in exhaust hood must be replaced; thermometers needed in all units.

Dairy Queen/Orange Julius, 17301 Valley Mall Road, Hagerstown - can opener needs to be cleaned; floor in walk-in cooler needs to be cleaned.

Forty West Lounge, 15924 National Pike, Hagerstown -hood filter needs to be cleaned; freezer must be defrosted; repairs needed to wall of walk-in.

The Maryland Theatre, 21 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown - all cups must be stored at least 4 inches off the floor.

Washington County Detention Center, 500 Western Maryland Parkway, Hagerstown - soda nozzles must be cleaned (corrected); product must be protected from condensation (corrected); rust must be removed from outside of ice machine; tape not acceptable on slicer.

Center Street Market, 401 Center St., Hagerstown - milk observed beyond the sell-by date (corrected); light bulb over exhaust hood must be replaced; vent grill cover needs to be cleaned.

Rocco's Italian Restaurant, 501 Liberty St., Hagerstown - ceiling tiles over ice machine must be replaced.

Chocolate Park Tavern, 14429 McAfee Hill Road, Cascade - cold water faucet must be repaired at three-compartment sink.

Bester Elementary School, 30 E. Memorial Blvd., Hagerstown - light shield in storage room must be replaced.

Cascade Elementary School, 14519 Pennersville Road, Cascade - exhaust hood interior must be cleaned.

The following food service establishments had no violations in September:

Sharpsburg Elementary School, 17525 Shepherdstown Pike, Sharpsburg; Hartle's Subs, 1301 Marshall St., Hagerstown; and Antietam Dairy Inc. mobile unit, 834 S. Church St., Waynesboro, Pa.
