'Taste of Washington County' to aid scholarship program, REACH

October 14, 2004

The Miss Washington County/Miss Western Maryland Scholarship Foundation has asked REACH to join them for this year's "Taste of Washington County."

If you're interested in a "meal" of memorable tastes - and funding two worthwhile programs at the same time - Miss Washington County/Miss Western Maryland and REACH have just the ticket for you. It's the scholarship foundation's second annual "Taste of Washington County," scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 7, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Plaza Hotel Grand Ballroom. The Plaza is one of the scholarship foundation's sponsors.

Jan Dorsey, board member, said area restaurants will provide a variety of foods for sampling at the event, including appetizers, soups, entrees and desserts.

In addition, Dorsey said, "Taste of Washington County" will offer door prizes throughout the afternoon, and will provide a "silent auction."

Greeting all the diners will be Miss Maryland, Miss Washington County and Miss Western Maryland.

Miss Washington County/Miss Western Maryland Scholarship Foundation, the local part of the Miss America Program, provides scholarship for young women between the ages of 18 and 24.

REACH's "Faith In Action Program" provides crisis intervention and cold weather shelter. Its "Faith In Action" is the story of many different faiths working together to meet one common goal - helping your neighbor in need.

Julie Schimmel, president of the scholarship foundation and Terri Baker, executive director of REACH, said "the money raised from this event will assist young women with much-needed educational monies, and will help extend the dire services needed in this community."

Participants in this "Taste of Washington County" will benefit not only by satisfying their taste buds but also by providing funds which will assist both nonprofit organizations with their community concerns programs.

Organizers of this event emphasize that "Taste of Washington County" is a tasting event and not a full buffet. A sampling of food will be made available to those attending and will be served by each participating restaurant at its own table.

A partial list of participating restaurants donating their time and food includes: Fireside Restaurant; Al Pomodoro Restaurant, Washington County Technical High School, Ruby Tuesday, House of Bliss, Court City Java, Pampered Chef, Clarion, Marcel's and many others.

The organizing committee includes: Julie Schimmel, Tom Riford, Ed Dorsey, Denise Apple, Sandra Miller, Jessica Schlotterbeck, Ron Thomas, Barbara Carson, Debbie Smith, Melissa Hummer, Theresa Falcone and Jan Dorsey.

Tickets for "Taste of Washington County" are $25, and may be obtained by calling the REACH office at 301-733-2371 or any REACH board member, and by contacting the scholarship foundation at 301-733-6430 or any board member. Tickets will be limited to 400.
