Man killed while cutting tree in Pa.

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - A Mercersburg man was killed Sunday morning in a logging accident in Montgomery Township, according to Franklin County Coroner Jeffrey R. Conner.

Leroy H. Mellott, 57, of 15040 Shimpstown Road, died of blunt-force head trauma in the 11:19 a.m. accident, Conner said. Mellott was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:20 p.m. and Conner said there will be no autopsy.

Mellott and another man were cutting trees for firewood on private property at 9397 Blue Springs Road, Conner said. The men had cut down a dead tree, but one of its limbs caught another tree as it fell, keeping it from falling completely to the ground, he said.

The other man went to get a skid loader to dislodge the tree and had gone just a short distance when he heard the crashing sound of the tree falling, Conner said. The man did not witness the accident, he said.

Pennsylvania State Police were notified of the accident, but are not investigating Mellott's death, Conner said. The coroner said he determined that a police investigation was not necessary.

No one answered the telephone Sunday at Mellott's home.
