Arumugam escapes the den with a win

WESTMINSTER, Md. - North Hagerstown junior Hemu Arumugam won the boys title at the Run From the Lions Den Invitational on Thursday, covering the course in 16 minutes, 34 seconds.

Atholton's Andrew Revelle was the runner-up in the 19-team, 132-runner field in 16:40. Thomas Johnson senior Marshal Lawrence was fifth in 17:04.

Liberty won the team title with 57 points. North was sixth with 213.


No. 1 Tuscarora 8, FSK 1

UNION BRIDGE, Md. - Chrissy Conrad and Molly Franlin each had three goals and an assist as Tuscarora routed FSK in an MVAL Piedmont game.

Courtney Yee had two goals and three assists for the Titans (8-1, 2-1), while Rachel Holmes added two assists.

No. 3 North 8, Clear Spring 1

Kelsey Brasher scored three goals for North Hagerstown as the Hubs rolled past Clear Spring in the MVAL Antietam.


Cara Thompson, Whitney Whorton, Jessica Shuff, Allie Snyder and Stephanie Lloyd each added a goal for the Hubs (9-2, 4-0).

Kayla Canfield scored for the Blazers (1-9, 0-4).

No. 6 Catoctin 4 Williamsport 0

THURMONT, Md. - Catie Vancour had 14 saves for Williamsport (3-6-1) in a loss to Catoctin in the MVAL Antietam. JV: Williamsport, 4-0.

No. 7 Smithsburg 7, South 0

Shannon Fowkes and Shelby Layman each had two goals as Smithsburg blanked South Hagerstown in the MVAL Antietam.

Katie Seifarth had a goal and an assist for the Leopards (6-4, 3-1), while Courtney Brown and Cara Jordan each had a goal.

Boonsboro 3, Brunswick 1

BRUNSWICK, Md. - Sarah Keyser had a goal and a assist for Boonsboro in the Warriors' MVAL Antietam win over Brunswick.

Danielle Daughtridge and Sarah Comides each scored for the Indians (6-4, 2-1).

Lisa Rolland scored for the Railroaders (1-6, 1-2) on an assist from Tara Custer, while Lucy Shankle made 10 saves.


Susquenita 7, Greencastle 0

COVE, Pa. - Beckie Willard had 23 saves for Greencastle (1-14).



LARGO, Md. - Staci Grabill had 30 assists and five aces to lead Hagerstown to a 30-8, 30-17, 30-21 win over Prince George's Community College.

Laura Lindsay had 12 kills and 13 aces for the Hawks (18-5, 9-0 Maryland JuCo), while Katie Spoonire had nine kills, seven digs and three aces and Mya Widmyer had 13 digs.


Nelson wins USATF title

BOALSBURG, Pa. - South Hagerstown graduate Laura Nelson, 39, of Waynesboro, Va., won the women's title at the USA Track & Field 50-Mile Championships last Saturday at the Tussey Mountainback 50-Miler.

Nelson covered the course in 7 hours, 6 minutes, 20 seconds for a women's course record.


Grier finishes seventh

University of Central Florida junior Ashley Grier, a Smithsburg High graduate, shot rounds of 69-72-78 for a three-day total of 3-over-par 219 to tie for seventh place at the Beacon Woods Invitational, played at Beacon Woods Country Club in Bayonet Point, Fla., last weekend.

Grier also had a top-10 finish in the Louisville Cardinal Cup, played last month in Kentucky.
