Fraud awareness seminar planned

A seminar on fraud awareness will give tips to seniors on preventing identity theft and falling prey to other scams aimed at older citizens.

The event is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 11, at 1:30 p.m., at the AMVETS Post 10 building at 770 Frederick St. It is sponsored by the SALT Council (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together) of Triad of Washington County.

Speakers will include Deputy 1st Class James Holsinger of the Washington County Sheriff's Department and Wayne Taylor.

Refreshments and prizes will be available at the free event.

Armchair aerobics to be part of meeting

FUNKSTOWN - Angela Kershner, a nutrition specialist with the Washington County Health Department, will conduct armchair aerobics at the Funkstown Senior Citizens meeting on Monday, Oct. 11, at 1 p.m.

The group meets at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 24 E. Baltimore St.

Toy collection boxes to be set up soon

Toy collection boxes and jars will begin appearing around Washington County as early as Sunday, according to David Danfelt of the Bulldog Detachment of the Marine Corps League, which sponsors Toys for Tots every year.


On Saturday, Oct. 16, representatives will be at Michaels next to Target at Valley Mall with a Toys for Tots booth. Marine Corps hats and shirts will also be for sale at that booth.

The U.S. Vets Motorcycle Club will hold a toy run rally Sunday, Oct. 17, at AMVETS Post 10 on Frederick Street in Hagerstown from 1 to 6 p.m. Admission is $10 or one new unwrapped toy. There will be raffles, food and door prizes.

The toy giveaway will be on Saturday, Dec. 18, from 1 to 6 p.m., at the Long Meadow Shopping Center. The exact location will be announced later.

Dance proceeds going to food banks

Proceeds from a benefit dance at the Hagerstown Elks Lodge this Friday will benefit Washington County food banks.

Sponsored by the Washington County Council of Churches, the dance will begin at 7 p.m. with big band, classic rock and oldies music by The Yorkers.

Bingo event to help Children's Village

A bingo bonanza to benefit Children's Village of Washington County will be held at the Williamsport Red Men, Conococheague Tribe 84 Lodge, 16129 Lappans Road, on Sunday, Oct. 10, with doors opening at 11 a.m.

Dinner will be served at noon with bingo starting at 1 p.m. Tickets cost $25 and include the dinner, 20 games of bingo (nine cards per game) and gaming. Additional bingo cards will be available.

Children's Village is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing free life safety education to all second-grade students in Washington County.
