Pa. man dies in I-81 crash

October 07, 2004

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - A Chambersburg man died Wednesday morning when the vehicle he was driving crashed on Interstate 81 in Antrim Township, Pennsylvania State Police said.

Robert C. Wolfe, 62, of 1560 Parker Drive, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 1:28 a.m. accident, according to Franklin County Coroner Jeffrey R. Conner. Wolfe died of blunt force head trauma, he said.

Police said Wolfe was driving a 1995 Ford Explorer seventh-tenths of a mile north of Exit 5 (Pa. 16) when it went into the median and traveled 365 feet before swerving back into the northbound lanes. The Explorer then rolled and slid another 306 feet before coming to rest on its roof, police said.

No autopsy was performed, he said.

Wolfe was wearing a seat belt, but the shoulder harness was not correctly positioned, Conner said.

Conner said the northbound lanes were closed after the crash, but one lane was reopened at about 2:15 a.m.
