Police responded to a call of a person with a weapon inside a house in Hagerstown's North End on Tuesday evening, according to a Washington County emergency dispatcher.

Hagerstown Police Department Sgt. Fred Wolford said officers set up a perimeter around a residence in the 1300 block of Cedarwood Drive for several hours. Wolford said the owner of the home said he received a threatening phone call from a man who was inside his house at about 6:30 p.m.

Wolford said officers used pepper spray and entered the house before 10 p.m., only to find that no one was inside. He said investigators believe the man ran out the back door just as officers were arriving.

Witnesses told police the man inside the home had a gun, Wolford said.

At 9 p.m., police still had Cedarwood Drive blocked off. A police officer there refused to talk about what was happening, saying that the release of information could jeopardize officers' safety.

A fire police member turning traffic away at the intersection of Haven and Outer roads said three SWAT teams were on the scene of the incident, but he didn't know more.

Wolford said the investigation is ongoing.
