Area roundup - Smithsburg avenges loss to No. 9 Warriors

BOONSBORO - Courtney Brown had two goals and an assist and Shelby Layman had a goal and two assists as Smithsburg avenged its season-opening loss to Boonsboro by shutting out the No. 9 Warriors 4-0 Monday.

Katie Seifarth had a goal for the Leopards (5-4), while Candace Stanford had three saves for the shutout.

Brunswick falls to 5-3.

No. 5 Hedgesville 2, No. 6 Mercersburg 0

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Hedgesville (10-2-1) won its sixth straight game, handing Mercersburg Academy (6-2) its second straight loss.

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va - Elaine Arabatzis scored the lone goal for Jefferson in its win over St. Maria Goretti.

Walkersville 2, Francis Scott Key 0

UNION BRIDGE, Md. - Rachel Humerick scored in the first half and Jamie Scott in the second as the Lions remained unbeaten.


Tara Garst and Heather Garver had assists and Michelle White made four saves for Walkersville (3-0-3).

Brunswick 1, Clear Spring 0

BRUNSWICK, Md. - Tara Custer scored unassisted in the ninth minute and Lucy Shankle had four saves to lead Brunswick (1-5, 1-1) its first win in an MVAL Antietam matchup with Clear Spring.

Jackie Hornbaker had 19 saves for the Blazers (1-8, 0-3).


No. 5 Walkersville 3, FSK 0

WALKERSVILLE, Md. - Tyler Reddick, Michael Bowers and Ben Seidel each had a goal as Walkersville defeated Francis Scott Key in an MVAL Piedmont game.

Patrick Skovira recorded the shutout in goal for the Lions (7-2, 3-0).

Grace 4, Heritage 0

Jordan Hanft had a hat trick and Andy Eyler had 10 saves to lead Grace past Heritage in the MDCC.

A.J. Serafini added a goal for Grace (9-2, 9-1), while Jacob Reese, Dalen Carlson and Danny Michael had assists.


No. 3 Williamsport 3, Westminster 2

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Williamsport made the best of a long match with a 25-16, 22-25, 25-19, 18-25, 15-9 victory.

Emily Mellott had 12 kills and seven blocks, Beth Ryan had 19 assists, eight kills and 17 points and Leah Drury had 19 assists and four aces for Williamsport (7-1).

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Tiff Hunsberger had 20 digs, 22 service points and three aces to lead James Buchanan to a 25-14, 25-8, 25-10 sweep of Bermudian Springs.

Ashleigh Helfrick had 20 digs for the Rockets, while Jess Snyder had 13 kills and Erica Helfrick had 30 assists.

No. 8 Smithsburg 3, Catoctin 0

THURMONT, Md. - Kayla Martin had 14 service points and 35 assists, Kenzie Bowen had 21 kills and 10 service points and Jenny Nalley had 11 kills and eight points as Smithsburg (5-2) swept Catoctin, 25-14, 25-19, 25-23.

Christina Rumbaugh had five blocks and four kills and Heather Hagelin had eight assists for Catoctin (4-3).

Clear Spring 3, Brunswick 0

Ashely Christ had 18 service points, nine assists and six aces to lead Clear Spring to a 25-22, 25-6, 25-21 win over Brunswick.

Megan Robinson had 10 service points and Lindsay Fiedler had five kills for the Blazers (3-5).

Berkeley Springs 3, Hancock 1

HANCOCK - Jenna Demory had 12 assists, eight kills, eight service points and three blocks for Hancock in the Panthers' 25-21, 24-26, 25-9, 25-23 Apple Valley League loss to Berkeley Springs.

Jessica Kerns had six assists and Katie Golden had seven service points for Hancock (2-5, 2-3).

CVCS 3, Faith 0

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Molly Brookens had 15 service points and six aces to lead Cumberland Valley Christian past Faith Christian 25-11, 25-14, 25-12 in the MDCC.

Miranda Payne had nine service points and 16 assists for the Blazers (8-3, 6-2) while Shania Liddick had 10 kills.

Waynesboro 3, McConnellsburg 2

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Karey Toms had 43 assists, Paige Tanner had 19 kills and Jana Akers had eight aces as Waynesboro (6-4) won the final three games to defeat McConnellsburg (7-3).

Trisha Seiders had 10 kills and Emile Ott had 28 assists for McConnellsburg.

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Beckie Willard had 12 saves for Greencastle in the loss.


HCC 3, Allegany 0

Megan Miller had 15 digs and 13 kills as Hagerstown swept Allegany 30-22, 30-26, 30-14 in Maryland JuCo Conference action.

Staci Grabill had 36 assists for the Hawks (16-5, 7-0), while Keri Jackson had 14 kills and 11 digs.

KEYSER, W.Va. - Jeremy Draper scored on an assist from Tim Miller in the second half to lift Hagerstown (5-3). Shawn Hunt had 15 saves for the shutout.


Rams earn weekly honors

PRINCETON, W.Va. - Two Shepherd University athletes were honored Monday when the West Virginia Conference issued its awards for the week of Sept. 27-Oct. 3.

Sophomore Susanna Hill, of Clear Spring, is the WVIAC Volleyball Player of the Week. Hill, an outside hitter, led the Rams to four league wins, averaging 4.3 kills and 4.4 digs per game.

Jamie Ritchie is the WVIAC Men's Soccer Player of the Week. The junior forward scored three goals and had two assists in two Shepherd wins.
