Police say driver showed gun in street race

Maryland State Police believe two cars were involved in a street race early Sunday when one of the drivers displayed a large handgun, according to police.

Police said the incident was reported about 7:30 a.m. Sunday. Police said a red Corvette and a black Honda Accord were driving side by side on westbound Interstate 70, between Md. 66 and U.S. 40, when one driver brandished the gun.

Police allege a gun was found in one of the vehicles, which was stopped on Acme Road near Virginia Avenue, during a subsequent traffic stop.

Police declined Sunday evening to release further information on the incident.

Sheriff's deputies respond to calls


The Washington County Sheriff's Department responded to the following calls over the weekend and this morning:

· A white Dodge Spirit was stolen from Harvard Road, near Dual Highway and Mount Aetna Road, according to a report made Friday at 7 a.m. The estimated value was not given.

· A purse was taken from a vehicle in the 11500 block of Green Valley Road, according to a report made Friday at 6 p.m. Nothing was in the purse, police said.

· A window on an Isuzu Rodeo sport utility vehicle in the 20300 block of Youngstoun Court, off Robinwood Drive, was broken, according to a report made Friday at 8 p.m. The damage was estimated at $300.

· A Honda was broken into on the 13900 block of Broadfording Church Road, near St. Paul Road, according to a report made on Saturday at 1:50 a.m. A subwoofer, speakers and an amplifier, with a total value of about $210, were stolen, police said.

· The front passenger window of a vehicle in the 15600 block of Overview Circle, off U.S. 40, west of Hagerstown, was broken, according to a report made on Saturday at 7:40 a.m. The estimated damage was $200. Also, a purse and $20 were taken, police said.

· Tools were stolen from a residence in the 12200 block of Brookfield Lane, near U.S. 40 and Md. 63, according to a report made Saturday at 11:30 a.m. The estimated value was not given.

· A Harley-Davidson Low Rider was stolen from Breakaway II on Pennsylvania Avenue, north of Hagers-town, according to a report made at midnight Saturday. The estimated value of the motorcycle was $11,000, police said.

· A sign was stolen from the walk in front of Memory Lane Antiques & Flea Market on Dual Highway, according to a report made Sunday at 2 p.m. The estimated value of the sign was $300, police said.

· A window was broken at Keystone Country Store on Pennsylvania Avenue, north of Hagerstown, according to a report made Sunday at 4:30 p.m. The amount of the damage was not given.

· A red Chevrolet Cavalier was broken into on Bramly Court, according to a report made at 2:30 a.m. today. A wallet was taken, too. No estimate was given for the damage and the value of the wallet.

Driver leads police on chase in Frederick


FREDERICK, Md. - Authorities in Frederick County, Md., are asking for the public's help in the identification of a driver who led police on a chase early Saturday, the Frederick Police Department said.

Police said a vehicle failed to stop for a police car with its emergency lights activated in the area of Center and West South streets at about 12:14 a.m.

Police said the vehicle, a navy blue Chevrolet Camaro, drove out of the city on South Jefferson Street to U.S. 340. Officers from Maryland State Police and the Brunswick (Md.) Police Department also helped chase the Camaro on several roads in the county, according to police.

It was last seen turning from U.S. 340 onto Harpers Ferry Road in Loudoun County, Va., police said.

Police said officers were instructed to end the chase at that point.

Pa. man injured in one-vehicle accident


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A Greencastle, Pa., driver suffered minor injuries Saturday morning in a one-vehicle accident on Sollenberger Road in Hamilton Township, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Police said Christopher Smith, age and address unavailable, was driving a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer north at 8:14 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle. The Mountaineer ran off the road, hit a rock and rolled over, police said.
