ORRSTOWN, PA. - A Lurgan Township boy was killed as he walked across Cumberland Highway Saturday afternoon to get the mail, according to Pennsylvania State Police and Franklin County Coroner Jeffrey R. Conner.

Johnny Lee Coons, 10, of 11387 Cumberland Highway (Pa. 997), was pronounced dead at the scene of the 3:07 p.m. accident, Conner said Sunday.

Police said Coons was crossing the road when he was hit by a southbound 1990 Chevy Lumina driven by Duane N. Newlin, 51, of Spring Run, Pa. Newlin was not injured, police said.

Conner said Coons had crossed the road to get the mail and was walking back toward his house when he was struck. The accident occurred near the crest of a hill, Conner said.

Pleasant Hall Volunteer Fire Co. fire and ambulance personnel assisted at the accident scene, police said.

Lurgan Township is in the northern portion of the county west of Shippensburg, Pa.

Police said the investigation is continuing, pending the results of a crash reconstruction and other tests. The investigating trooper was unavailable Sunday afternoon.
