Freshman libero Savanah Wetzel gave the Hagerstown Community College Hawks the boost they were looking for from the service line.

Wetzel, a Waynesboro High School graduate, came through with 24 service points, eight aces and 22 digs to help the Hawks sweep the Catonsville Cardinals 30-23, 30-25, 30-21 on Friday night in a Maryland JuCo Conference volleyball match at the HCC athletic complex.

The win gives the Hawks (15-5, 6-0) a one-game lead over Catonsville (5-1 conference) in the standings.

"It felt good to get a lot of service points in a row a few times," Wetzel said. "I was just doing the routine procedure of serving. Nothing changed. I think that the communication and the regrouping from the recent matches were the keys to helping us win tonight's match. I think that our progress has come along pretty good."

Staci Grabill had 31 assists, while Meggie Miller had 13 kills and 11 digs for HCC. Keri Jackson added 13 kills and Katie Spoonire came off of the bench to get seven service points for the Hawks.

"I think tonight was the first night that the whole team contributed to the win," HCC coach Beth Domenico said.

HCC was able to overcome the solid play at the net by Catonsville 6-foot sophomore Vanessa Happel, who had eight service points.

The Cardinals were leading 21-19 in the first game when Wetzel served seven straight points to give the Hawks the lead for good at 26-21.

Catonsville was up 7-5 in the second game when Wetzel served four points in a row to put HCC ahead 9-7.

The Cardinals were in front 6-2 in the third game when Wetzel added seven more consecutive points to give the Hawks a 9-6 lead.
