Bulldogs' regular-season win streak ends

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. - The Martinsburg Bulldogs lost their first regular-season game in nearly three years Friday night, falling to Bluefield, 31-28.

The Bulldogs, the top-rated Class AAA team in West Virginia and No. 1 in The Herald-Mail Super 7 poll, had won 27 straight regular-season games dating back to the 2001 season before losing to the state's top-rated Class AA team.

Martinsburg's last regular-season loss was Oct. 12, 2001 - a 14-13 defeat to Southern Garrett.

The Bulldogs lost three times in the playoffs - twice to Parkersburg South, once to Parkersburg - in between.

Martinsburg (4-1) led 7-0 in the first quarter but trailed 17-7 at the half. Bluefield led by 10 points three different times in the game.

Nate Sowers threw for 242 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Bulldogs.

No. 2 Frederick 54, Walkersville 8

WALKERSVILLE, Md. - Bruce Dorsey ran for 145 yards and scored four touchdowns as Frederick pounded Walkersville in a nonconference game.

Cory Rhodes passed for 208 yards and threw touchdowns to Bryan Lanning, Billy Gross and Anthony Walker for the Cadets (5-0).

Steel-High 46, James Buchanan 13

STEELTON, Pa. - Pedro Cabrero rushed for 93 yards and a touchdown for Steelton Highspire (4-1, 2-0) as they beat James Buchanan in the Mid-Penn Capital Division.

Josh Cotton passed for 88 yards and a touchdown for the Rockets (1-4, 0-2) while Tyler Morris rushed for 48 yards and a touchdown

Greencastle 28, East Pennsboro 24

HARRISBURG, Pa. - Blake Border had 221 passing yards and threw for three touchdowns for Greencastle in the Blue Devils' Mid-Penn Colonial win over East Pennsboro (3-2, 1-1).

Ty Thrush rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown for the Blue Devils (3-2, 1-1), while Erick Burkholder had 131 receiving yards and caught two touchdowns.

Boiling Springs 35, Waynesboro 14

BOILING SPRINGS, Pa. - Austin Rutz rushed for 138 yards and scored two touchdowns for Boiling Springs (2-3, 1-1) in a mid-Penn Capital win over Waynesboro.

Michael McKenzie ran for 85 yards and a touchdown for the Indians (1-4, 1-1), while Cory Livengood threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Nolan Smith. Nathan Minnich had 63 yards receiving.

Boys' Latin 24, St. John's at Prospect Hall 22

TOWSON, Md. - Keith Ricca threw for 301 yards and three touchdowns, but St. John's at Prospect Hall fell just short against Boys' Latin in MIAA Conference C action.

Max Morris caught all three touchdown passes and finishedwith 173 receiving yards for the Vikings (2-3, 0-3). Garret Miller rushed for 54 yards and Randal Smedley had 53 recieving yards.

Fort Hill 56, Hedgesville 7

CUMBERLAND, Md. - Kevin Page rushed for 106 of Fort Hill's 333 total rushing yards as the Sentinels rolled past Hedgesville in a Cumberland Valley Athletic League game.

Page also had a receiving touchdown, while Branden Giffin rushed for two touchdowns and passed for 43 yards for the Sentinels (5-0)

Michael Lopez passed for 69 yards and threw a touchdown pass to J.B. Bowman for the Eagles (1-5).

Other scores:

Westminster 39, Thomas Johnson 6; Maryland School for the Deaf 74, Turkeyfoot 0.

Grace 3, Faith 0

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Katie Kendall had 16 service points, Jessica Cowman had nine kills and Kristin Serafini had 12 assists and eight aces for Grace Academy in a 25-11, 25-11, 25-9 victory over Faith Christian.

Smithsburg 1, Williamsport 0

SMITHSBURG - Smithsburg picked up its first win of the season in a peculiar fashion.

Initially, the Wildcats beat the Leopards 1-0 in an MVAL Antietam matchup Thursday night.

On Friday, however, a 1-0 win was awarded to Smithsburg (1-7, 1-1) because Williamsport (3-6-1, 0-2-1) played with an ineligible player.

Grace 5, Faith 0

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A.J. Serafini and Danny Michael each scored two goals and Jordan Hanft scored one to lead Grace Academy over Faith Christian. Jacob Reese, Dalen Carlson, Steven Wilson and Justin Gardenour each had an assist for Grace. Andy Eyler and Brian Stitely combined for the shutout for Grace (8-2, 8-1).

Sidwell Friends 4, St. James 0

ST. JAMES - Sidwell Friends scored four goals in the second half to beat St. James in the Mid-Atlantic Conference.

Nate Venditta had 16 saves for St. James (3-4-1, 1-3-1).

GIRLS SOCCER


No. 1 Tuscarora 5, Middletown 1

FREDERICK, Md. - Natalie Salovich, Courtney Yee, Emily Grant, Rachel Micol and Molly Franklin each scored a goal as Tuscarora (7-0, 1-0) beat Middletown in the MVAL Piedmont.

Ali Keeney scored the only goal for the Knights (4-3, 1-1).

Goretti 1, Williamsport 1

Erica DiMercurio scored the only goal for St. Maria Goretti, while Erin Goins and Andrea Buckner combined for 11 saves. Laura Scuffins scored a goal and Catie Vancour had four saves for the Wildcats.

Mussleman 5, Goretti 4

INWOOD, W.Va. - Rachel Boyd scored two goals, while Amber Smith, Sarah Talbot and Jesseka Hale each scored one as Musselman defeated St. Maria Goretti on Thursday.

Erin Goins had three goals, Carissa Grove scored one and Andrea Buckner had 11 saves for the Gaels.

FIELD HOCKEY


Camp Hill 4, Greencastle 0

Shaye Painter and Becky Willard combined for 15 saves for Greencastle.
