MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A Martinsburg man visiting his mother at the Capital Heights apartment complex Wednesday said two men tried to rob him, but when he fought back he was hit with a gun and gunshots were fired, according to police.

West Virginia State Police Trooper D.S. See said the attempted armed robbery happened at around 8 p.m. No arrests were made.

The victim, Dale Everhart, 24, of Martinsburg, told See that two men approached him and demanded he hand over his money and his jewelry, See said.

Everhart refused and swung a fist at the assailants, See said.

The men then "pistol-whipped" Everhart, causing a cut on the back of his head, See said.

As Everhart ran, gunshots were fired, he told police. Others in the complex said they heard gunshots, but nobody reported witnessing the incident, See said.

Everhart was taken by ambulance to City Hospital for treatment of the head injury, See said.

Everhart told police he was visiting his mother and was leaving her home when the attack happened. He did not know the names of the assailants, See said.

See said the men are believed to have fled the area on foot.
