Ward L. Swales, 81


JAN. 16, 1923 - SEPT. 28, 2004

Ward Leo "Bill" Swales, 81, of View Street, Hagerstown, Md., died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Jan. 16, 1923, in Clearfield, Pa., he was the son of the late William Grant and Lula Vaughn McDivitt Swales.

He was employed by Fairchild Aircraft for 40 years, retiring in 1985. He served in the Merchant Marine. He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 694, Loyal Order of Moose for 40 years, United Auto Workers Union Local 842 and was a former member of the Freestaters Drum and Bugle Corps for 12 years.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Darlene M. Barton Swales; two daughters, Vaun M. Miles and Amy L. Miller, both of Hagerstown; one son, William L. "Bill" Swales of Sarasota, Fla.; four sisters, Celia M. Kelly of Bakersville, Calif., Frances Pederson of Tacoma, Wash., Caroline Charles of Pinehurst, Idaho and Violet Mudris of Panama City Beach, Fla.; one brother, Harold Gregory Swales of Washington State; seven grandchildren, Jamie, Brittney, Timmy, Erin, Jesse, Dylan and Kyla Addison; and a beloved family friend, Terry Renner of Hagerstown.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Smith, and a brother, William Grant Swales.

Services will held at 1 p.m. on Friday at the Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home. The Rev. Shari A. Baer will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m.




Andrew J. Ungvarsky, 70

SMITHSBURG - Andrew James "Jim" Ungvarsky, 70, of Smithsburg, Md., passed away, Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, Md.

Born Thursday, Jan. 11, 1934, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., he was the son of the late Andrew Ungvarsky and Anna Paulkovsky Ungvarsky.

He was a graduate of Kings College in Wilkes-Barre and later earned his master's degree from Shippensburg University in Shippensburg, Pa. He was employed by the State of Maryland, Department of Education, until retiring in 1996.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion, BPO Elks Lodge 378, AARP, North American Rod and Gun Club, VFW, Eagles Club Inc. and Eagles Travel Club, both of Waynesboro, Pa. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and being a father and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Peggy Lahart Ungvarsky; four daughters, Mary Byers and husband, Dave, of Hagerstown, Anne Akers and husband, Rick, of Smithsburg, Md., Michele Mauck and husband, Jerry, of Hagerstown and Maureen Grove and husband, Allen, of Hagerstown; one brother, Joseph Ungvarsky and wife, Ruthanna, of Hagerstown; grandchildren, Matthew and Kristen Byers of Hagerstown, Alex, Nieko and Mitchell Akers of Smithsburg, Brandon, Kimberlee and Taylor Mauck of Hagerstown, Austin, Brett, Bailey and Wyatt Grove of Hagerstown; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at 9:30 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 224 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, with Father George Limmer as celebrant.

Interment will follow at Rest Haven Cemetery in Hagerstown.

Family will receive friends at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, Oct. 1.

Fannie J. P. Skidmore, 76


MAY 5, 1928-SEPT. 28, 2004

HANCOCK, Md. - Fannie Jane Price Skidmore, 76, of Myers Street, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, at Washington County Hospital.

Born May 5, 1928, in Little Orleans, Md., she was the daughter of the late Franklin and Lilly Norris Price.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Skidmore.

She was a homemaker.

She was a Protestant.

She is survived by five sons, Ervin J. Burton of Hancock, Robert C. Burton of Big Cove Tannery, Pa., Benjamin T. Burton of Cumberland, Md., Albert M. Hann of Hagerstown and Robert L. Skidmore of Warfordsburg, Pa.; three brothers, Ervin Price and Joe Price, both of Little Orleans and Roy Price of North Rose, N.Y.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and her companion, Lloyd T. Divelbliss.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Webster Price, James Price and Benjamin Price.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home in Hancock. The Rev. Darryl McClain will officiate. Burial will be in Price-Wesleyan Memorial Cemetery in Little Orleans.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will open at 2 p.m.
