County sees drop in unemployment rate

September 29, 2004|by JULIE E. GREENE

Washington County's unemployment rate improved from 3.8 percent in July to 3.7 percent in August, according to preliminary estimates released last week by the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.

"In August, you have a lot of people leaving the summer job market. Colleges tend to start earlier than they used to, even some of the high schools start earlier now, so you tend to see that exodus of summer jobs in that period," Western Maryland Job Service Director Shanon Wolf said Tuesday.

The county's civilian labor force shrunk by 951 people from July to August. The unemployment rolls decreased by 137 people in that time period to 2,590 people.
