Heritage weekend honors Civil War past

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - The 20th anniversary of Middletown Heritage Weekend Celebration will be held Saturday, Oct. 2, and Sunday, Oct. 3, at Middletown Volunteer Fire Company Carnival Grounds.

Re-enactors will participate in the Ransoming of Middletown. Particpiants will include cavalry from 1st Virginia Company H and 1st Maryland Company C and the 4th Maryland Light Artillery. The 17th Virginia Company H, and 8th Georgia Company A, 8th North Carolina Company A and the 62nd Pennsylvania also will participate. The re-enactment will follow a parade at 11 a.m.

Entertainment includes:

Saturday: Harmony Band, 1:30 to 2 p.m.; Orchard Boys, 2 to 3 p.m.; Kelly Nealon, 3 to 3:30 p.m.; square dancers, 3:30 to 4 p.m.

Sunday: Dee Buchanan Dance, 12:30 to 1 p.m.; Living Stones, 1 to 1:30 p.m.; Common Clay, 1:30 to 2 p.m.; One God One Voice, 2 to 2:30 p.m.; Tom Catania, 2:30 to 3 p.m.; Middletown High School Chorus, 3 to 3:30 p.m.

A pet contest will be held Sunday at 3:30 p.m. Prizes will be given to the biggest, best costume, not so stupid pet trick, smallest, pet and owner lookalike, funniest and most exotic. Pets must have up-to-date vaccinations; children younger than 12 must be accompanied by an adult; no animals in heat. Owner must clean up after their pet. No aggressive pets may participate.
