Thomas P. McGuire, 67

JAN. 15, 1937-SEPT. 24, 2004

LARGENT, W.Va. - Thomas Patrick McGuire, 67, of Largent, and formerly of Arlington, Va., died Friday, Sept., 24, 2004, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Jan. 15, 1937, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late Harry and Cecilia Rush McGuire.

He was a 1956 graduate of Washington Lee High School in Arlington.

He retired from Arlington County Parks and Recreation.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He was a Catholic.

He was a member of Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post 60 and Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1483, both of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.


He was a bluegrass musician, playing the mandolin, guitar and dobro.

He is survived by one daughter, Patricia L. McGuire of Jacksonville, Ala.; one sister; three grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Harold McGuire.

Military graveside services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Mount Nebo Cemetery, Great Cacapon, W.Va. The Rev. Joseph C. Mercieca will officiate.

Arrangements are by Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs.

Betty J. Hechmer

RANDALLSTOWN, Md. - On Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, Betty Jane (nee Mullandore) Hechmer died.

She was the beloved wife of the late Alan Charles Hechmer; devoted mother of Robert Lee Myers and his wife, Kathryn E., Kathryn Myers Lating and her husband, Robert W.; stepmother of Ken Hechmer and his wife, Terri; sister of the late Ralph Mullandore and his wife, Louise, and the late Audrey Grove; sister-in-law of Cecil Grove; and loving grandmother of Thomas Jackson "T.J." Myers, Leslie Lating and Robert Lating.

Due notice of service in October will be given. Interment will be in Arlington (Va.) National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Kidney Foundation and Arlington House.

Arrangements are by Loring Byers Funeral Directors, Randallstown.

Laura I. Pierce, 76

JULY 2, 1928-SEPT. 24, 2004

BUNKER HILL, W.Va. - Laura Irene Pierce, 76, of Bunker Hill, died Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at Winchester (Va.) Medical Center.

Born July 2, 1928, in Martinez, Calif., she was the daughter of the late David L. and Emma Smith Moore.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin M. Pierce.

She was a member of Mountain View Church of the Brethren.

She is survived by two daughters, Mary L. Kerns of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Margaret L. Cupp of Bunker Hill; three sons, Marvin L. Pierce of Falling Waters, W.Va., Ronald L. Pierce of Bunker Hill, and George L. Pierce of Winchester; one foster son, C. Leroy Baker of Myersville, Md.; one brother, Alton Moore of Reedsport, Ore.; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Richard L. Pierce; two sisters; and three brothers.

Services will be Monday at 2:30 p.m. at South Berkeley Funeral Chapel, Inwood, W.Va. Pastor Michael Staubs will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends today from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Melody L. Reese, 41

SEPT. 13, 1963-SEPT. 24, 2004

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Melody L. Hawkins Reese, 41, of 5118 Bino Road, and formerly of Somerset, Pa., died at noon on Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, Md., following an extended illness.

Born Sept. 13, 1963, in Daytona Beach, Fla., she was the daughter of Audrey Bauman Hawkins of Stoystown, Pa.

She was employed by First Data in Hagerstown for 11 years. She was a member of Macedonia United Brethren Church near Greencastle, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and a youth leader.

Mrs. Reese was a graduate of Somerset Area High School.

She and her husband, Allen J. Reese, were married Feb. 21, 1987, in New Centerville, Pa.

Surviving family, in addition to her husband and mother, are one son, Jacob A. Reese at home; four sisters, Suzanne (Mrs. V.R.) Jones of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Betty (Mrs. Fred) Flick of Somerset, Sally (Mrs. Robert) Snyder of Stoystown, and Samantha (Mrs. Randall) Keller of Houston, Pa.; two brothers, Gregory R. (husband of Barbara) Firestone of Myrtle Beach, and Mark Firestone of Vine Grove, Ky.; Melody's in-laws, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Reese of New Centerville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Amanda L. Hawkins.

Local funeral services will be held on Monday, Sept. 27, at 10:30 a.m. at Macedonia United Brethren Church, 11887 Worleytown Road, Greencastle, with the Rev. Gayle L. Ruble Sr. officiating. Burial will be in the Husband Cemetery Somerset.

The family will receive friends today from 6 to 9 p.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, and at the church one hour before services on Monday.

In lieu of flowers, the family sincerely requests that memorial contributions be given in her memory to Macedonia United Brethren Church, 11887 Worleytown Road, Greencastle, PA 17225.
