Area roundup - Trojans shock No. 1 'Dogs

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Kevin Cramer had two goals and an assist and Corey Grove had a goal and an assist as Chambersburg upset No. 1 Martinsburg 3-0 in their interstate matchup Thursday night.

It was the first loss of the season for the Bulldogs (6-1-1) and only the second win for the Trojans (2-5-2).

Chambersburg, which outshot Martinsburg 13-5, led 3-0 at halftime.

Eric Johnson made four saves for the shutout, while Matt Martin had seven saves for the Bulldogs.

JV: Chambersburg, 2-0.

No. 4 Greencastle 12, Harrisburg 1

HARRISBURG, Pa. - Dustin Young scored a goal and assisted on four others as Greencastle rebounded from its first loss of the year with a rout of Harrisburg in Mid-Penn Capital action.

Treavor Gelsinger had a hat trick, Jared Barkdoll and Adam Haldeman each had two goals and Allen Lehman, Adam Wiestling, Mac Frederick and Jason Freeman each added one for the Blue Devils (7-1, 5-1). Gelsinger and Haldeman each had two assists and Cory DeMasters had one in the win. Stephen Sprague had five saves.


Brent Rotta scored the lone goal for Harrisburg.

No. 6 Walkersville 4, Tuscarora 0

WALKERSVILLE, Md. - Patrick Skovira had 10 saves for his second shutout of the season in Walkersville's MVAL Piedmont opening win over Tuscarora.

Matt Farley, Ben Seidel, Eric Blackwell and Michael Bowers each scored for the Lions (5-2, 1-0). Ben Gould and Michael Smith had assists.

Big Spring 1, Waynesboro 0

NEWVILLE, Pa. - Big Spring's Chris Lightner scored in the 30th minute of the second half to beat Waynesboro.

Zach Settlage had six saves in goal for Waynesboro (2-4).

St. John's-PH 7, Mt. Carmel 0

FREDERICK, Md. - James Smith had two goals, while Quinn Miller, Ike Izevbigie, Devin Luqman, Jeff Sung and Sam Weaver each added one as St. John's at Prospect Hall blanked Mt. Carmel in MIAA 'C' Conference action.

Ryan Poticny had four assists, Miller had two and Weaver added one for the Vikings (4-4-1, 1-1). Joe Ballenger had four saves for his second shutout.

Broadfording 4, Front Royal 3

Alan Myers scored the game-tying goal in the 75th minute and Jacob Wyand scored the winning goal a minute later as Broadfording slipped past Front Royal Home School.

Myers finished with two goals and Zach Fraker had one for the Lions (3-4-2). Jon McConnell and Andy Lytle each had an assist and Brian Snyder had 11 saves in the win.

Casey Davis had two goals, Jordan Horn had one and Eric Hotek had 10 saves for Front Royal.

St. James shut out

ST. JAMES - Nate Venditta had nine saves for St. James (2-3-1, 1-2-1) as the Saints were shut out by Georgetown Day School in the Mid Atlantic Conference.


No. 4 North 1, Williamsport 0

Freshman Jessica Shuff scored on an assist from Tia Scott in the first half and North Hagerstown held Williamsport scoreless in its MVAL Antietam opener at School Stadium.

Heather McLeaf had four saves for the shutout for the Hubs (5-2, 1-0).

Catie Vancour had 22 saves for Williamsport (2-4, 0-1).

JV: North, 1-0.

Martinsburg 3, Goretti 1

Ashley Roman, Kristen Marshall and Sarah Lazur each scored for Martinsburg as the Bulldogs defeated St. Maria Goretti.

Morgan Hunley made seven saves for the Bulldogs.

Erica DiMercurio scored, while Erin Goins had eight saves for the Gaels (1-3-2).


Brunswick 81, Clear Spring 0

BRUNSWICK, Md. - Eric Zwilsky rushed 13 times for 209 yards and four touchdowns as Brunswick hammered Clear Spring in the MVAL Antietam opener for each team.

Cory Hargett and Bryan Wright led the Railroaders (2-2, 1-0) with one sack each on defense.

Clear Spring remains winless at 0-4 (0-1).

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Jade Dunhour had 10 assists and six aces for Greencastle as the Blue Devils beat Scotland, 25-16, 25-17, 25-8. Mandi Mentzer added 21 digs for the Blue Devils (9-1).

JV: Greencastle, 25-15, 25-18.

No. 5 Boonsboro 3, Broadfording 0

BOONSBORO - Jessie Ambrose had 10 kills and 16 assists for Boonsboro as the Warriors swept Broadfording, 25-21, 25-15, 25-12.

Caitlyn Selby had 11 kills and Kasi Harris had six kills and eight blocks for the Warriors (5-0).

JV: Boonsboro, 2-0.

No. 6. James Buchanan 3, Steel-High 0

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Tiff Hunsberger had 23 service points - including 10 aces - as James Buchanan pounded Steel-High 25-6, 25-4, 25-7 in the Mid-Penn Capital.

Ashleigh Helfrick had 10 digs and eight kills and Erica Helfrick had 24 assists for the Rockets (8-1, 4-1). Jenny Hess had 10 digs and Amy Heisey had eight kills in the win.

No. 9 Smithsburg 3, North Carroll 1

SMITHSBURG - Kayla Martin had 15 assists and seven aces for Smithsburg in the Leopards' 25-14, 21-25, 25-8, 25-21 win over North Carroll.

Bethany Young added 10 kills for the Leopards (3-1), while Kenzie Bowen had seven kills.

Chestnut Ridge 3, Southern Fulton 0

WARFORDSBURG, Pa. - Jessie Wigfield had 15 kills and nine digs for Southern Fulton in the Indians' 25-20, 25-15, 25-17 Sideling Hill League loss to Chestnut Ridge.
