Broadfording to auction quilt

September 22, 2004

When a challenge was presented in May to members of the Broadfording Church of the Brethren Fellowship to make a quilt for this Saturday's church auction, quilters of the congregation rose to the occasion.

Church member Dorothy Binkley, a regular participant in weekly quilting sessions at St. Paul's United Church of Christ near Clear Spring, was asked to lead the endeavor.

The women worked for more than 80 hours to complete a fully hand-stitched Dresden Plate quilt in time for the auction. The experience sparked so much interest within the group that similar projects are planned for the future.

Among those not pictured who also helped are Mary Hawbecker, Bev Mowen-Hann, Teresa Smith, and Jane Wolford.

The quilt is one of many items, including other handcrafted articles, which will be offered for sale at the church's second annual auction, which begins at 5 p.m. Saturday.

The event will take place in the fellowship hall of the church at 14010 Greencastle Pike in Cearfoss. Doors will open at 3 p.m. Soup, sandwiches and desserts will be available starting at that time. All proceeds from the auction and food stand will benefit the building fund.

The Broadfording Church of the Brethren Fellowship was established as a congregation in 1979. A new sanctuary and fellowship hall was built in 1984. The church is now in an $800,000 expansion program, which will provide additional classrooms, kitchen and family life center to meet the growing needs of the congregation.

Weekly Sunday services include Sunday school at 9:30 a.m. and a worship service at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday evening ministries for children, youth and adults are held at 6:45 p.m. Also, a praise and worship service is held on the third Sunday of each month at 8:30 a.m.
