Missing Williamsport girl found in Texas

September 19, 2004

A 12-year-old girl who was reported missing Aug. 30 was found in a motel Wednesday evening by the Corpus Christi (Texas) Police Department, Washington County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Mark Knight said.

Knight said Erika Marie Russell had been visiting her mother, who did not have custody of the child, when she was reported missing.

"She was granted visitation and she just never brought her back," he said.

The Texas police department found the Williamsport girl and her mother in a Corpus Christi Motel 6 and placed the girl in the custody of Child Protective Services in Texas, where she is waiting for a ride home to her father.

"Apparently, Wal-Mart's gonna help him out (getting the girl a ride back) either by bus or by plane," Knight said.

Knight said that there is a warrant out for the mother's arrest, but that the warrant only is extraditable from the East Coast.

He said that a parental abduction charge carries a one-year jail sentence and/or $1,000 fine.
